Bear experts say how you defend yourself from an attacking bear depends on the type of bear. Reid Roberts hardly got any warning when he was attacked! In Forest for the World, a park in Prince George, British Columbia, he was out on a run with his dog, Pacer. They must have startled the mother black bear and her two cubs because she came after Roberts, ready to fight.
Within moments, Roberts was on his back trying to kick the bear off. Suddenly, Pacer, a border collie, started barking and nipping at the bear. Pacer’s efforts distracted the bear, but for only a second, and then she was attacking Roberts again. Finally, the bear ran off after Pacer and Roberts was able to get help.
